New cases of the coronavirus in the US continue to hit record highs, in sharp contrast to many other countries where illness rates have fallen off.
Experts told Business Insider part of the increase can be blamed on Americans' blasé attitudes, which are fueled by a politicization of the pandemic - but that's not the whole story.
Public health guidance has also been both confusing, conflicting, and at times downright unhelpful and dishonest, making it really hard for Americans to know how to do the right thing.

Global markets were mixed Friday as investors seek direction with the US markets closed in observance of of the Fourth of July public holiday.
Chinese stocks hit a five-year high as stronger than expected PMI data out of the world's second biggest economy boosted sentiment.
In Europe, stocks dropped a little, although there was no immediately apparent key driver to the moves.
Liquidity was thin with few US investors online during the day.

The US was left off the European Union's list of countries allowed to enter the bloc when it reopened borders on Wednesday.
Three EU diplomats told NBC News on Thursday that US coronavirus cases were too high for Americans to be considered for the initial reopening.
A total of 15 countries made the cut. It includes China, where the pandemic started.

Coronavirus cases are rising in 40 out of 50 US states. Experts say the Fourth of July holiday would make it worse

The US coronavirus outbreak is accelerating at record pace as the typically frenetic Fourth of July weekend approaches.
The US set records for new daily coronavirus cases on Wednesday and Thursday, and cases numbers are trending upwards in 40 states.
Experts fear that, as with Memorial Day Weekend in May, people will gather, defy health guidelines, and facilitate the spread of the virus.
"The most patriotic thing they can do this year is to stay at home," said Dr. Peter Beilenson, the top health official in Sacramento County, California.
