Japan gears up for 2020 Olympics and welcoming more tourists

A record number of tourists visited Japan last year, as the country prepares to welcome the world to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
Some 28.7 million foreign tourists visited Japan in 2017. It means that the country has tripled its number of visitors in the past five years amid a huge promotional drive before the Olympics. The visitor numbers show nearly 20-per cent gain on the previous year. The numbers are boosted by the Chinese tourists taking advantage of more frequent low-cost flights to Japan.

Last year, the number of international tourists visiting Spain broke records for a fifth straight year, in spite of Islamist militant attacks in Catalonia and political uncertainty over its independence movement, as per government statistics.
Spain, where tourism accounts for around 11 percent of the economy, has seen a surge in international visitors, which is, in part, due to security concerns in other popular holiday destinations such as Egypt and Turkey.

The Philippines receives a record of 6.8 million tourists last year

Exceeding expectations and going past political noise on the war on drugs and terrorism in Mindanao, tourist arrivals in the Philippines reached a record 6.8 million last year, surpassing the government's target of 6.5 million, according to the Department of Tourism .
Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon T. Teo said that preliminary figures indicate around 6.8 million foreigners came to the Philippines last year.
Teo said, “It was almost 7 million. Our target was 7 million, but we have to reduce it to 6.5 million.”
