New Zealand's tourism industry is struggling to fill a $6 billion hole left by international tourists who could not visit New Zealand during the summer months.
Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Chris Roberts says despite New Zealanders' efforts this summer, it just can't compare to what international tourists bring in.

The arrival of international tourists will increase by 33.7 per cent in 2021 compared to last year in a best-case scenario, according to the federal Tourism Ministry of Mexico, but even if that upturn is achieved tourism would still be well below 2019 levels.
According to Sectur's most optimistic projection, 33.1 million international tourists will come to Mexico this year, 8.3 million more than in 2020 when tourism slumped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tourism chiefs are urging the federal government to extend jobkeeper-style payments for workers in the sector beyond March, following predictions that international travel will not recommence this year.
Darren Rudd, the Australian Federation of Travel Agents chief executive said that he had spoken with the tourism minister Dan Tehan and that he has supported the idea of further helping the industry.
However, Rudd said that there are some cabinet ministers who would need to be convinced that the sector deserves extra support above other industries.
