Lebanon's Supreme Council of Defense said that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate had been left in storage at Beirut port from an abandoned ship.
The explosive chemical was stored there after it was impounded on its way to Mozambique, according to reports from the time, then largely forgotten.
Lebanese officials believe it is behind the cataclysmic explosion that hit Beirut's port on Tuesday, according to state media.

Beirut was devastated by a huge explosion Tuesday, upending the lives of its millions of citizens.
Two Beirut residents caught up in the blast told Business Insider about their experience.
One was a woman who was driving near the center of the blast at Beirut's port. She felt the explosion in her body before seeing or hearing it.
The other was a medical resident at a Beirut hospital which was overwhelmed with injuries. He worked through to 2 a.m.
"We saw so much pain in people's eyes," he said.

A massive explosion that destroyed buildings and killed at least 100 people in Beirut, Lebanon, damaged some city hospitals so badly that they can't treat blast victims.
The New York Times reported that at least four were too damaged to admit patients, while other reports describe destroyed and damaged facilities.
