Anonymity has always been part of the internet, but Facebook wants us to use our real names in the metaverse. Should we allow fake identities online?

Social media is rife with fake accounts, anonymous users, and alternate profiles. Getting rid of anonymity won't solve the problems of the internet. Marianne Ayala/Insider
Facebook has long pushed for people to use their real identity on its platforms.
But digital anonymity has been part of the internet since it began - and users love having the option.
For all the downsides of fake accounts, doing away with anonymity won't solve the internet's problems.
