'Children don't belong in jail': Critics are seizing on Trump's executive order to detain entire families together

Critics are seizing on President Donald Trump's executive order that ends family separation for migrants and instead seeks to detain entire families together if they cross the border illegally.
The Trump administration will have to amend an existing legal agreement known as the Flores settlement, which bars the government from detaining children longer than 20 days.
Indefinitely jailing children is inhumane, immigration advocates say, and there are better ways than detention to ensure migrant families properly navigate their asylum proceedings.

Immigration lawyers warn Trump's executive order still gives the government plenty of wiggle room to keep separating parents from their children

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order he said will end the separation of migrant families at the US-Mexico border.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order ending his administration's practice of separating migrant families.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to end the separation of migrant families along the US-Mexico border amid fierce backlash both at home and abroad.
In signing the order, Trump essentially admitted he had control of the policy all along despite repeatedly dodging responsibility and attempting to punt the issue to Congress.
The executive order will keep families together in detention rather than separating them.

"It's about keeping families together," Trump said from the White House as he signed the order, adding, "while ensuring we have a powerful, very strong border."
